Distribution: Cameroon and Nigeria only
Weight: Females: 70 - 100 kg
Males: 150 - 175 kg
Habitat: Rainforest
Reproduction: First birth at 11 years, one offspring every 4-5 years
Group: One adult male with 3-6 females and offspring
Life span: 35-40 years
Status: Critically Endangered
Message: The great apes are our closest relatives, but today they are endangered and all accusing fingers are pointing at us.

 

Chimpanzees

Distribution: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, CAR, PRC, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda
Weight: Females: 35 - 45 kg
Males: 45 - 60 kg
Habitat: Various forest habitats
Reproduction: First birth at 11 years, one offspring every 5 years
Group: Multi-male, multi-female groups, of 20 to 60 animals
Life span: 35-45 years
Status: Endangered
Message: The main threats to the survival of great apes are habitat destruction, poaching and the bush-meat trade.

Bonobo

Distribution: DR Congo
Weight: Females: 30 - 40 kg
Males: 45 kg
Habitat: Rainforest
Reproduction: First birth at 11 years, one offspring every 4-5 years
Group: Multi-male, multi-female groups, of 10 to 40 animals
Life span: 35-40 years
Status: Endangered
Message: Humans do not evolve from great apes or even monkeys, instead we all share a common ancestor.

Orang - Utang

Distribution: Indonesia, Malaysia
Weight: Females: 35 - 50 kg
Males: 70 - 90 kg
Habitat: Rainforest
Reproduction: First birth at 10 years, one offspring every 8 years
Group: Solitary, except mating adults, mother and child
Life span: 35 years
